A Champion of Inculturation: Celebrating the Life of Vandana Mataji rscj

This is the story of Sr Gool Mary Dhalla rscj, better known as Vandana Mataji, of the Indian Province. On September 13, 2024, we commemorated the centenary of her birth. Vandana’s one desire was to see the Indian face of Christ made visible in the life of Indian Christians. She was inspired by the spirit of Vatican II, and devoted herself to the inculturation movement, that is, to the adaptation of Christian teachings and practices to cultures, and in doing so she called the Church to renewal and transformation. She was admired for her boldness in immersing herself in India’s religious and cultural context and she inspired many, both religious and laity, in India and abroad to heed the voice of the Council for the transformation of our Churches. She continues to be a reminder to us of our mission as Christians, to be at one with all peoples towards a New Heaven and Earth.
