Year of Prayer: Week 11

"Mission to the New World," icon by Patricia Reid rscj (USC)

Facing the Unknown
Rebecca feels the breeze
stirring the ribbons on your travel-hat
and soon you will be summoned
Sophie consents at last, and blesses you.
How painful these last moments!
vineyard — and tumbril — weigh
upon your lonely sacrifice, as France recedes
and Indians call in language quite unknown;
but very soon they’ll know you through and through,
Woman who always prays!  Pray then for us; we too
bring the essential from our heritage
leaving the rest, as we set sail
for new life, a new land.
