A student’s heartfelt thank you to Madeleine Sophie

Rebeca Mellado, an eighth-grade student at the Colegio del Sagrado Corazón in Concepción, Chile, has written a heartfelt letter to Saint Madeleine Sophie about her wonderful experiences at the school. Because she is visually impaired, she was initially worried that others there would treat her poorly. Instead she found a supportive and loving community, one that celebrates all of our diverse gifts. The photos are of Rebeca with her best friend and the letter that she wrote in braille.

Dear St. Madeleine Sophie:

I am writing this letter to thank you for the opportunity to study in one of the best schools in the world, the Sacred Heart of Conception School, but above all, I want to thank you for including me in this wonderful educational community.

I say this because I am a visually impaired person, however, I am a person like everyone else.

At first I was afraid, because I thought that everyone would make fun of me, but now I know that you have accepted me as I am and will always help me with whatever I need.

In addition, I will ask you to encourage us to continue to include more female colleagues and to treat them like any of us.

Signed,

Rebeca Mellado, student in grade 8-B, Sacred Heart School – Concepción
