“Times change and we must change with them”
The year 2025 marks the 100th anniversary of the canonization of Saint Madeleine Sophie. In a world where life is threatened by social turmoil, wars, and climate crisis, not only in Korea but also in many other countries, we are invited to deepen our understanding of the meaning of Sophie’s canonization.
In preparation for the 100th anniversary of Madeleine Sophie’s canonization, KOC Province has begun a preparatory prayer journey by providing a prayer dedicated to Sophie. The goal of the Preparatory Prayer Journey is to invite us to “grow closer to Madeleine Sophie and to live the call for conversion and transformation in order to carry out our mission of responding to the needs of our time.” To this end, from March to June, prayer materials and reflection questions will be shared with KOC members for praying together on monthly recollection day.
We will use this opportunity to reflect on the meaning of the canonization by asking, “What does Sister Sophie’s life and her accomplishments mean for us who live in the 21st century, which is far different from the social and cultural conditions of her time?” (F. Kimber RSCJ (2025), in Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat).
In addition, our province will offer special lectures on “Madeleine Sophie Barat / A Life ” and “The Gift of Sophie” in May and June. And on Sunday, May 25, 2025, the Sisters of the Sacred Heart will invite associates and mission partners to a Eucharistic celebration and refreshments.
As we celebrate and commemorate the 100th anniversary of the canonization of Saint Madeleine Sophie in the midst of a world in turmoil, may the Holy Spirit be with us on our journey so that we may not be distracted by the non-essentials, but to focus on the essentials; and may this moment be an opportunity for conversion and transformation.
