Launch of the Centenary Year of Madeleine Sophie’s Canonization

On December 14, 2024 in Joigny, RSCJ and others gathered in the house where Madeleine Sophie was born, joyfully celebrating the beginning of the centenary year of Madeleine Sophie’s canonization.

Provincial Noëlle Favet RSCJ had this to say:

“We are celebrating the anniversary of Sophie Barat’s birth in this house 245 years ago! It was here that little Sophie’s life journey began. A journey filled with the desire to follow the Lord, to listen to His Spirit, to make known the Love of His Heart for all, especially young people, by accompanying their development through education. Despite many ups and downs, her life’s path and her faith led her to holiness, a holiness recognized and celebrated by the universal Church 100 years ago, on May 24.

On December 8, we celebrated the reopening of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. A relic of Madeleine-Sophie was placed in the high altar, representing a new birth of the cathedral and of Sophie’s link to the Church.

And tonight, why are we here? To celebrate the beginning of the centenary year of her canonization, which will be commemorated through various events in Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Italy, and Egypt until December 12, 2025. It’s not a question of looking to the past, but of letting the figure of Madeleine Sophie Barat continue inspiring us to be reborn, to open our hearts, to join the Heart of Christ, to let ourselves be transformed to serve his Kingdom.

So, together and in communion with all the sisters of the Sacred Heart, their collaborators and friends, let us enter this Eucharist with joy and gratitude for the continuation of the path she set out on as we begin this centenary year!”
