On the 27th to the 28th of July,
Stuartholme School in Brisbane, Australia
welcomes the participants of the
2019 Sacred Heart Education Conference.
The theme for this year’s conference is
“Competencies of Compassion.”
Our Stuartholme correspondents send
photos and brief updates each day.
Day 1
The 2019 Sacred Heart Education Conference began with the “welcome to country and smoking ceremony” led by our indigenous students and prayer in front of the statue of St. Madeleine Sophie.
All proceeded to the theatre, where all conference guests were warmly welcomed by our Principal Kristen Sharpe.
Our two keynote speakers — Sr. Maureen Glavin RSCJ in the morning, and Dr. Stephen Brown in the afternoon — shared their perspectives on “Competencies of Compassion.”
There were different workshops, and the topics included:
-
Teaching and learning at KRB: Targeting Mathematics competencies through rich tasks
-
Leading with the Heart
-
Student engagement in creating a sustainable school
-
Introducing philosophy for children (P4C) using the community of inquiry approach.
We ended the first day with and African-themed dinner catered by refugees from Africa, and a concert. The evening has been a wonderful experience of bringing different cultures together.
Day 2
On the second day of the Conference, the participants went through a workshop, a series of school presentations, and a panel discussion.
After morning tea at the Pink Balcony, the blue ribbon students of Stuartholme took the participants on a tour of the school.
The Conference ended with before lunch with Mass at the chapel. Stuartholme presented a gift to each participant — a collapsible cup with the inscription from Matthew 10:42.
