Yoonsoo Song, an alumna of Sacred Heart High School in South Korea, explains the meaning of her painting of Mater and what inspired her.
I am Yoonsoo Song, an alumna of Sacred Heart High School in South Korea. Ever since, I thought that I was very familiar with the image of Mater Admirabilis because I could see her picture hanging on the wall in the corridor every day. Today, as a staff member of the Barat Youth Center in Seoul, I noticed more detailed elements that I was not able to grasp when I was in high school. For example, the lowered yet open eyes and the weaving needle in Mater’s hands caught my attention and warmed my heart.
When painting Mater Admirabilis, I wanted people to feel a greater sense of familiarity with her. The Virgin Mary is often depicted as a distant and holy figure, but I hoped this painting would help her be perceived as a warm, motherly presence in our everyday lives.
This painting conveys the message that Mater is not a distant figure, but rather a motherly presence who is always close by, ready to soothe our hearts.
The painting emphasizes her gentle smile and tranquil expression. I hope that viewers can find comfort and peace in her soft embrace and see her as someone who is always there for them. I want not only believers but also those who may not have faith to find peace and inner calm through her.
Ultimately, this painting conveys the message that she is not a distant figure, but rather a motherly presence who is always close by and ready to soothe our hearts. I hope that everyone who sees this painting can feel comforted and have the opportunity to connect more deeply with her presence.
