Learning to be: Blandine’s experience volunteering in Mexico

Blandine talks about her first three months volunteering in Guanajuato, Mexico.

It’s already been three months since I arrived in León, in the state of Guanajuato, in central Mexico!

Little by little, I am discovering popular education with the sisters on staff. The weeks are punctuated by various workshops in rural community schools, preparing for them, helping out at the games library, and the solidarity markets every two weeks. I share my daily life with the five sisters in the community and a young Mexican volunteer.

Serving others does not necessarily mean feeling useful; it also means recognizing and accepting your limitations, learning to be, rather than to act, and changing your view of the world around you.

This volunteer work is an opportunity for me to learn to let go and trust in God. Trust in the place where He has decided to send me, but also in the challenges of everyday life: choosing to live them with Him, whether they be discoveries, joys, but also misunderstandings, frustrations, and sometimes even disappointment or indignation in the face of situations of violence, abandonment, injustice, poverty… This experience is also an opportunity for me to allow myself to be touched by difficult realities while cultivating hope and learning to rediscover God’s presence through simple joys: smiles, glances, words, silences, colors, the tears of joy of a child who has overcome his fear of groups, sunsets…

In short, it is taking up the challenge of accepting to open one’s heart and allowing oneself to be transformed. The adventure is just beginning!
